Negative Health Effects of Soda Are Depressing!

People who are suffering from post break up blues or are having a stressful day often turn to comfort foods and drinks to lift up their spirits. These include chocolates, ice cream, junk food and different kinds of sweetened beverages like soda. However, it seems that these sweets actually make a person’s health matters even worse. In fact, a recent study has found that there really are negative health effects of soda that may raise the risk of depression for people instead of making them feel better!  That particular comfort food turns out not to be such a comfort after all!

The new study tackled soda’s health effects and that of other sweetened beverages as well. These sweetened drinks are said to have been linked with depresseion after research that involved 263,925 people between the ages of 50 and 71.

Negative Health Effects of Soda Are Depressing

Americans drink far more soda than people in other countries — as much as 170 liters per person per year (no wonder New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg banned super-sized servings of the stuff). But the impact of this study isn’t limited to the United States. “Sweetened beverages, coffee and tea are commonly consumed worldwide and have important physical-and may have important mental-health consequences,” study author Dr. Honglei Chen, an investigator at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, said in a statement.

The study, which was released on Tuesday and will be presented at the American Academy of Neurology‘s annual meeting in March, involved 263,925 people between the ages of 50 and 71. Researchers tracked their consumption of beverages like soda, tea, coffee, and other soft drinks from 1995 to 1996 and then, 10 years later, asked them if they had been diagnosed with depression since the year 2000. More than 11,300 of them had.

“Our research suggests that cutting out or down on sweetened diet drinks or replacing them with unsweetened coffee may naturally help lower your depression risk,” said Chen. “Coffee contains large amounts of caffeine, which is a well-known brain stimulant.” (Read the entire story here.)

The study discussed by the author found that the participants who consumed more than four servings of soda a day were found to have a 30 percent chance of developing depression, compared to those who did not drink soda during the span of the study. Furthermore, the participants who consumed fruit punches had an even higher chance at 38 percent, compared to those who didn’t drink sweetened beverages. Hence, low-calorie diet sodas, fruit punches, and iced teas are more harmful to your health compared to the high-calorie drinks.  Researchers feel the likely cause is because they are sweetened with the artificial sweetener aspartame.

On a lighter note, people who can’t start the day without caffeine have no need to worry. It has also been found by the study that people who drink coffee in the mornings had a 10 percent lower risk of the depression, compared to people who do not drink coffee.

Dr. Chen also notes that people with the “Big D” should not rely on reducing their soda intake to lessen their problem as more research is needed to back up these findings.

Since there are no good health effects of soda, it’s a good decision to change your favorite “comfort drink” before it’s too late. Settle with a hot creamy or black coffee in the cold windy months, or iced unsweetened coffee in the hot summer months when you’re feeling down.  Try herbal teas or other healthy drinks that will quench your thirst without harming your health!
