5 Ways To Eat Healthy Food On A Budget

Cheaper Health Food!

eat-healthyOne of the reasons people often give for not eating healthy is that it costs so much more than processed foods. In some cases that is true, but you have to take into account the quality of the fuel you are putting into your body. It’s hard for your body to run on sludge, but much easier if given the high octane of quality health foods!

5 Ways To Eat Healthy on a Budget

1. Watch what you drink. The cheapest beverage you can drink is also the best one for you… plain old water. Instead of swilling down a bunch of sodas every day, make a switch to water.  Even if you start by just swapping out one drink a day, you’re improving your diet.

And it doesn’t have to be plain water. For instance, you can flavor it with a little lemon juice and stevia.  Lime juice is another refreshing change.

Herbal and regular teas are another way to flavor your water.  Use a natural sweetener and you can actually get even more health benefits than plain water due to the benefits of tea.  Some people even use green tea for dieting!

For times when you want a treat, consider Sobe Life Water, which is a naturally sweetened vitamin enhanced water beverage.  It’s not exactly budget friendly, but available in a lot of grocery stores cheaper than you can buy it on Amazon.  Watch which flavors you buy, however, as not all of them are 0 calories.  Also note that they are sweetened with Xylitol, a type of sugar alcohol.  Some people have intestinal issues if they drink too much of it, while others are not bothered at all.

Zevia, a brand of stevia sweetened soda, is even less budget-priced, but another beverage to keep in mind for a treat.

But for economy and health, remember… you can’t beat water!

2. Eliminate junk food.  Think about the price of those chips or other junk foods.  They are highly processed, usually packed with chemicals, salt and/or sugar, and obviously not part of a health food diet.  Try switching to more natural foods, like air-popped popcorn instead of chips.  You’ll save money and improve your health.

3. Buy fruits and vegetables in quantity.  Find a farmer’s market or produce stand near your home and buy fruits and vegetables in bulk when they are in season.  You can easily freeze any extras, or learn to can if you don’t have a freezer large enough to hold a lot of extra food.

4.  Freezers are a great buy!  Speaking of freezers, if you don’t own one, consider investing in whatever size you can afford.  Having a freezer available widens your options.  You can buy all kinds of foods in bulk which is usually cheaper, then tuck them away in your freezer until needed.

5. Beans for protein.  You don’t need to eat meat at every meal!  You can save money and add fiber to your diet by  substituting a bean dish at some mealtimes.  There are many kinds of beans, and all kinds of recipes.  Also, they lend themselves well to cooking in a slow cooker, so you can  let them cook during the day, then your meal is ready in the evening.

If you have trouble with gas after eating beans you should try washing them, covering them with water, bringing the water to a boil, then draining it off and refilling the pot.

There are many more ways to save money while eating more healthy foods.  Once you start thinking about the options, you’ll have more and more ideas on how to eat healthy on a budget!
